The ideal width of a massage table depends on the type of treatment and the preferences of the practitioner and client. In general, the following applies:
Standard width: 60–70 cm, which is advantageous for people under 1.65 m tall. This allows you to get closer to your client, which can prevent back problems. It is also often suitable for sports massages. Because more pressure is applied during these types of massages, it is useful to sit closer to the client.
Wide massage tables: 75–80 cm or wider, ideal for people with a taller build.
A less wide massage table does not mean less comfort for your clients either. Ensuring a good balance between the comfort of both client and masseur is important. Furthermore, you can use various accessories to make your table even more comfortable for your client.
Furthermore, it is good to know that the wider a table is the more difficult it is to carry with you in the case of portable massage table. Therefore, using a carry bag or a carrying case can help make wider tables easy to take along while travelling.
The ideal working height of a folding massage table depends on your height and the type of treatment you give. Most folding tables are height adjustable, usually from about 60 cm to 85 cm.
For massage: A lower height (60-70 cm) gives you more power from your body.
For lighter treatments such as reiki or cosmetic treatments: Slightly higher tables (70-80 cm) are more comfortable.
As a rule of thumb, you can use the following:
Stand upright next to the table and let your arms hang relaxed along your body. Your fingers should touch about the level of the table top, which is a good starting height.
Reiki panels are openings or recesses on the head and foot side of the massage table, usually under the table, which allow you to comfortably place your legs under the table during a treatment. This is ideal for masseurs who give a lot of facials or work with foot reflexology.
These panels are especially popular with:
Reiki therapists, who work a lot sitting at the head end
Energetic therapists or beauticians who prefer to treat sitting down
Thanks to reiki panels, you can closer to the client sitting without bumping your knees against a dense side panel or solid construction. This ensures better posture and less strain on your back and shoulders. Because you need to lean forward less
The thickness of the mattress (or covering) on a massage table largely determines the comfort for your client. A good professional table has a mattress thickness of 5 to 10 cm.
5-6 cm thickness: Suitable for shorter treatments or mobile use (lighter, more compact)
7-8 cm thickness: Comfortable for longer treatments, standard for most practice tables
9-10 cm or more: Luxury comfort, recommended for wellness centres or high-end treatments
Besides thickness, the type of foam also plays a role. Cold foam or memory foam offer more comfort and support than standard polyether foam.
At TouchPro Europe, we offer tables with different foam types and thicknesses - from firm to extra soft, always tailored to professional use.
